Fall protection is an issue that must be addressed prior to the
occurrence of a free fall in a job. In most cases, roof fall protection is a
major problem that is commonly fixed after an accidental fall
had already occurred.
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration is a
government agency that ultimately sets the standards for all
job safety, such as inspection frequency and roof fall
protection laws. Below are several guidelines that must be
adhered when it comes to proper fall protection
laws.
Fall Safety Training
Train all employees, as much as possible, in all safety
equipments and procedures that they need to know in order for
them to adhere to proper roof fall protection laws.
Take note of written orders that are precise and clear. Make
sure that you also write your orders in different languages, in
order to break several language barriers among foreign
employees. Make sure that the person who is conducting the roof
fall protection training is very familiar with the nature of
the job and equipments.
Fall Safety Inspections
Before the contract of work begins, any roof fall hazards must
be indentified and repaired as soon as possible. Search for any
open gaps or holes on building constructions such as stairs,
roofs, skylights and shafts. Close all these holes or mark them
with warning barriers so that they can be recognized
immediately.
Remove any power outlet cords from walking areas, or you can
secure them if there are no areas that you can store them
in.
Make use of roof fall protection equipment when fall threats
and risks cannot be removed. Use the proper roof fall equipment
guide as set by OSHA.
Check all roof fall protection equipment, ropes, harnesses and any other types of devices that
are used in the job for any defects and replace them as they
are needed. If you are particularly unsure, stick on the side
of safety and replace them.
Ladder and Handrail Safety
Ladders are major threats and pose an occasional fall hazard
among construction jobs. Avoid standing on a ladder’s top rung
or on the top step of a step ladder. Before any employee climbs
up the ladder, make sure that the ladder is steadied and
secured.
Inform and order your employees how to use handrails that are
needed on the job for going up and down the ladders or stairs
or on any locations where they are specifically
installed.
Monitor Employees’ Safety Actions
This is probably the most important safety and roof fall
protection guidelines that you must observe as this will
invariably protect you and your employees from grave accidents.
Always check on your employees. Inspect them if they are using
safety equipments
and procedures properly and appropriately. Keeping an eye for
employees who has the habit of ignoring simple rules can
ultimately prevent the occurrence of unlikely accidents and who
knows, this can even save someone’s life. Write a memo for
employees who constantly skip the safety steps that you ordered
them to observe. This will be an effective mean to warn them of
their wrong doings.
